  • The Wall, Closer to Home: Angel Fire's Half-Scale Replica
The half-scale Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall replica at Angel Fire, its black granite panels overlooking the Moreno Valley.

The most famous memorial in America now has a counterpart in the Moreno Valley. Just north of the Peace and Brotherhood Chapel at Angel Fire stands a half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall — 250 feet of black granite carrying 58,318 names.

The replica is the same design as the Wall in Washington, D.C., at half the size: two angled wings of polished stone etched with the names of every American service member lost in Vietnam, in the order they fell. Among the 58,318 names are 398 New Mexicans. Visitors walk the path along the wall the same way they do in Washington, slowing as the panels rise, looking for names they know.

The Wall at Angel Fire did not come from a government program. It began as a grassroots effort by Vietnam Veterans of America Northern New Mexico Chapter 996, based in Santa Fe — veterans who believed New Mexico's families should not have to travel 1,800 miles to stand before a father's, brother's, or friend's name. The project took more than seven years of fundraising, planning, and construction on the memorial grounds above the valley.

The replica was dedicated on June 28, 2024, joining the chapel that started it all. The pairing is powerful: the white chapel Victor and Jeanne Westphall raised for their son in 1968–71, and now the long black wall naming him and all the others. One memorial is personal, the other national; together they make the Angel Fire memorial grounds unlike any place in the West.

For the veterans who built it, the point is simple. Healing should not require a trip across the country. Now, on a quiet hill in the Moreno Valley, it does not. The wall is open around the clock, like the chapel beside it, for anyone who needs to come — at dawn, at dusk, or in the middle of a mountain night.
