  • Angel Fire Conditions: A Cold, Clear Start and a Mountain Getting Ready for Winter
A wide view over the town of Angel Fire and the Moreno Valley toward the Sangre de Cristo mountains under a partly cloudy sky.

Thursday, October 29, 2026

Angel Fire woke up clear and cold on Thursday, with temperatures around 30 degrees at sunrise and a bright morning in the Moreno Valley. The day warms steadily under partly cloudy skies to a high near 60 degrees, with west winds picking up to around 8 to 9 miles per hour in the afternoon. There are no weather alerts for Angel Fire, sunset comes at 6:07 p.m., and the overnight low falls back to about 29 degrees. Friday turns a little cooler, with a high near 56, a low near 33, and a small chance of rain.

The shared Enchanted Circle radar check matches that calm picture. Skies were clear over northern New Mexico and the Enchanted Circle on Thursday morning, with only a small shower noted just north of Clovis in eastern New Mexico, near the Texas line along the drive-in route north out of Clovis. For anyone driving NM-38, US-64, or the valley roads today, this is a straightforward late-fall travel day: watch for frosty patches in shaded spots early, enjoy dry roads by midday, and plan on a cold evening once the sun drops behind the Sangre de Cristo foothills.

On the mountain, Angel Fire Resort is still in pre-season mode, and there is no skiing yet. The resort lists Opening Day as December 11, 2026, with winter activities running through March 21, 2027, and it has also confirmed there will be no night skiing this winter. That makes these quiet weeks the time to get ready rather than to ride lifts: check passes, book lodging early for the anniversary season ahead, and keep an eye on the resort snow report as temperatures allow snowmaking to begin.

Crews have been preparing for that moment all fall. In an October 7 update, the resort said its mountain operations teams, led by Director of Snow Services Jesse Stocking, are replacing and upgrading roughly 2,000 feet of snowmaking pipe across the mountain. The new high-pressure lines replace decades-old pipe, remove old bottlenecks, and should let crews make high-quality snow where it is needed most, supporting faster trail openings and deeper base layers once sustained freezing weather arrives. The resort has also been clearing ski runs ahead of the season.

For visitors in the valley today, late-fall conditions reward layers and timing. Trails and scenic stops around Angel Fire and Eagle Nest Lake are best after the morning frost softens, and a warm layer is essential after sunset. In town, Shuter Library hosts Minecraft Coding from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., live music is listed at Par and Grill with Raven Hills from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Ry Taylor plays Elements from 4 to 6 p.m. It is a calm, golden Thursday on the Circle, with winter clearly on the way.
